April 27: Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things (1998)
Set in the hot and steamy state of Kerala in southern India, this hot and steamy novel about one family’s struggle with the Indian caste system is a sad portrait of what happens to those who try to find a meaningful life outside a borg like system. Twins Rahel and Estha discover the truth as they go back home to see what happened to their lovely mother Ammu and the other members of their crumbling family. Tolstoy said unhappy families are each unhappy in their own way. This lovely work assuredly portrays one of the ways.
