Journalist RJ Smith debuts his latest book, a biography of pioneering photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank.
About Robert Frank:
Contemporary and close friend of Beat legends Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Peter Orlovsky, the photographer and filmmaker Frank is best known for The Americans, a downbeat portrait of 1950s America. It has long been recognized as a transformative artistic document of the country at mid-century. Also a pioneer of American independent cinema, Frank made a legendary film with the Rolling Stones. Today, at 93, Frank defines what it means to be an artist in America and what it costs to be free.
Robert Frank is private, evasive, he makes up stories about his past to throw off writers. American Witness is the first full-length look at his myth and his work. It is a compelling portrait of Frank’s times and the seismic impact he had upon them.
