Canon Club

One of the Library’s longest-running discussion groups—the Canon Club—completed its first journey through the Shakespeare’s 38-play canon in 2013. Working their way through the canon again, the club now also includes reading and discussion of canon-adjacent plays: those written by Shakespeare’s contemporaries (such as Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton, John Fletcher, or others); those written about Shakespeare or early modern theatre (such as Lee Hall’s adaptation of Shakespeare in Love or Richard Eyre’s Stage Beauty); or adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays (such as Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead or Anne-Marie MacDonald’s Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet)). Expanding and enriching their notion of the canon, the club brings its knowledge of Shakespeare’s works to bear on plays that surround, intersect, and intervene in that canon. Joining each discussion are members of The Cincinnati Shakespeare Company.
